Choosing an electric gate? Seven questions worth asking
Quick answer
A powered gate is a machine, not simply a manual gate with a motor attached. Ask who is responsible for the complete design, how site-specific hazards will be reduced, what safety devices are included and what documents, testing and maintenance arrangements you will receive.

1. Who is responsible for the complete powered gate?
Confirm who takes responsibility for the gate leaf, supports, motor, controls, electrical work, safety devices, commissioning and overall conformity. Splitting these elements between different parties without a clear lead can leave important gaps.
2. How will the site-specific risks be assessed?
The assessment should consider foreseeable users, including children, as well as the gate’s location, movement, operating forces, weather exposure and possible misuse. A generic component list is not a substitute for looking at the actual entrance.
3. Where are the crushing, trapping and impact points?
Ask the designer to explain risks created by the moving gate, fixed posts, hinges, rollers, drive mechanisms and nearby walls or railings. The finished design should reduce or protect those hazards.
4. Which safety devices are included and why?
Photocells, sensitive edges, force limitation, guards and hold-to-run controls each address different risks. The right combination depends on the gate and site; no single device automatically makes every installation safe.
5. What happens during a power cut or fault?
You should know how to isolate the system and use the manual release or another safe operating mode. Access to the release, instructions and emergency arrangements should be discussed at handover.
6. What testing and documents will be provided?
Ask what commissioning checks, user instructions, declarations, labels and maintenance information are included. Keep these with the property so future users and maintenance contractors understand the complete system.
7. How will the gate be checked and maintained?
Powered gates need regular inspection, testing and adjustment to remain safe. The maintenance plan should reflect the manufacturer’s instructions, usage level, exposure and any changes to the surrounding site.
